Use A DualShock 4 on PS3

STEP 1
MAKE SURE YOUR PS3 HAS THE LATEST FIRMWARE
To get your PS4 pad working with PS3, you'll first have to make sure that old last gen dear has up to date firmware. Anything after the recent 4.60 will see you right. Thanks to this nifty update, it’s not only possible to play PS3 games with a DualShock 4, but you can even do so wirelessly. What an age we live in. It wasn't long ago this please don't look at my doctorate too closely MD was using leeches. Next up: sorting out your PS3’s Bluetooth devices.

STEP 2
REGISTER YOUR PS4 PAD AS A BLUETOOTH DEVICE
This gaming man of medicine learnt step the second at the same seminar as ‘Get Confident, stupid’ and ‘Smoke Yourself Thin’. Now that your PS3 is oh so firm with its ware, it’s time to register that DualShock 4 as a Bluetooth device. First, go to Accessory Settings on the XMB. From here, scroll to Manage Bluetooth Devices to start a big ol’ Bluetooth scanning party. Don’t worry, the Doc will bring fizzy pop and streamers. During this process, press and hold the Share and PS buttons on your
PS4 controller until the light bar starts blinking white. Et voilà! The PS3 should now detect your DS4 as a ‘Wireless Controller’. Confirm this with a final jab of X on your DualShock 3, then it’s on to PS4 party town. Population: one learned PlayStation gamer whose last-gen shooting is about to get a whole lot more accurate.

STEP 3
GET USED TO THE LIMITS OF THE ‘GENERIC’ CONTROLLER
Yeah, there ‘may’ be a few side effects your beloved quack forgot to mention. Y’know that part where your PlayStation 3 recognises the PS4 pad as a ‘Wireless Controller’? That actually means the crusty old console just assumes the DualShock 4 is a generic PS3 controller. This means you can give rumble feedback and gyroscopic controls a wet smooch goodbye. Yes, Doc knows how much you
were looking forward to playing Lair with your shiny new-gen contraption. The other thing to bear in mind is that your DualShock 4 can only be paired with a single machine at once, so each time you want to use it with your PS4, you’ll have to resync it. Ditto for every occasion you get a hankering for some PS3 on PS4 pad action. Still, those sticks are sooo much more analoguey. You know it’s worth the slight hassle.
